Cyber-attacks in the UK grew by an alarming 140 percent in 2018, according to a cyber-threat landscape report by eSentire that discusses the most impacted industries in the UK and which kinds of attacks were the strongest.

Attacks on IoT devices also have seen substantial growth, with “a growing tendency in IoT exploits targeting surveillance equipment, door controls, cameras and media devices . In the UK, the majority of the exploits that were observed specifically impacted devices manufactured by AVTech, a leading manufacturer of video surveillance and tracking equipment. ”

The researchers discovered that Moses were keen to use phishing lures that were Dropbox-theme. The report found that workers in the UK are better than their counterparts in preventing attacks despite evidence that organizations in the UK had a greater proportion of exploit attacks than the average.

“In the UK, this growth in global botnet activity drove significant increases in the number of exploit (10 percent ), malware (45 percent ) and scanning (15%) detections observed by eSentire throughout 2018. The attack type was phishing, which while still a substantial threat to UK businesses, saw roughly 20 percent decrease in observed incidents,” the report stated.

Manufacturing and marketing were the industries, while no business is with no risk. “Marketing agencies received a substantial number of Apple-related baits. This concentration of Apple lures in a market perceived to have a high number of Apple desktops and laptops reveals that threat celebrities are currently customizing lures to specific businesses to improve their success rate,” the report stated.

The report also found that email is among the most common attack vectors and that “by reducing this attack surface, UK organizations will be protected . ”
